Grosses Gewächs vs. Kabinett Trocken, at Noreetuh, Thursday, March 20th, 2025 at 6:30pm

Delicious, intellectual, and inane: Welcome to the 100% blind, Grosses Gewächs vs. Kabinett Trocken tasting and dinner, hosted at New York City’s legendary Noreetuh restaurant.
Only a little over twenty years ago, German wine presented a new category of wine to the people: the “Grosses Gewächs.” Translating to “great growth,” these new “G.G”s avoided the awkward word-jumbles of the Prädikat system (Spätlese Trocken?) and gave consumers an easy win: They knew the wines were Grand Cru and absolutely dry.
In many ways this move shifted the focus from an issue now less relevant (ripeness), to what should have always been front and center: the terroir.
Yet what, if anything, was anything lost? Was there – is there – value in differentiating wines both by site and by ripeness?
Please join us for a multi-course, family-style dinner in Noreetuh’s back room where we will present, completely blind, multiple flights of GGs, Kabinett Trockens, Spätlese Trockens and Auslese Trockens from vintages going back over a decade. We will only reveal the wines poured at the end of the night, but it’s safe to assume there will be dry Rieslings from J.B. Becker, Breuer, Emrich-Schönleber, Julian Haart, Keller, Ludes, Schäfer-Fröhlich, Stein, Weiser-Künstler, and more.
If you would like to bring wines to add to the conversation within the thematics, please reach out to [email protected] to be sure they are not already represented.
This will be a historic, and ludicrous, evening.
